Espacio y color en el José Guerrero

Hace unos días tuve la oportunidad de volver a visitar uno de mis lugares favoritos de Granada, el Centro José Guerrero. Está ubicado en un edificio del centro, al lado de la Catedral, rehabilitado en el 2000 por uno de los arquitectos más importantes de nuestro país, Antonio Jiménez Torrecillas. Este maestro de la luz le dio al edificio la calidad que este tipo de espacios necesita. Y el resultado fue fascinante. Una de las partes del museo que más adoro es la tercera planta, donde puedes sentarte sobre un bellísimo banco de madera y echar un vistazo a las cresterías de la cubierta gótica de la Capilla Real

Esta vez, fui al Centro para enseñar el edificio a una pareja de buenos amigos, que también son arquitectos, y descubrimos la exposición temporal ‘Dieciocho colores para un ensayo’, desarrollada por la artista Paloma Gámez. Es muy interesante recorrer el edificio, viendo las diferentes partes de la muestra, la cual versa sobre el tema del color. En la planta baja encontramos la sala llamada 84.084 milímetros de color, donde la pintura parece resbalarse desde el piso superior. Es justo en este siguiente piso donde podemos encontrar algunas de las pinturas de José Guerrero. Estas obras han sido seleccionadas por Paloma Gámez y también nos hablan sobre el color. Este tema ha sido el aspecto más importante en la obra de Guerrero, y lo es también en el trabajo de Gámez.

Conforme continuamos la visita subiendo por la magnífica escalera de madera, llegamos a la siguiente parte de la exposición. Esta segunda fase se llama 420.367 segundos de color y trata sobre el verdadero espíritu del color: su propia luz. Hay muchas imágenes que proyectan color sobre nosotros y sobre las paredes mismas de la sala, y la sensación es bastante interesante y extraña.

En la tercera y última planta se encuentra la parte más impresionante de la colección. Llamada 120.316 centímetros cuadrados de color, está compuesta por muchos filtros y láminas traslúcidas coloreadas en distintos tonos que permiten ver a través de ellos. Si has llegado hasta esta planta, tienes que permitirte el lujo de pasear a través de estas ventanas de colores y sentir el espacio. Con esa intervención, la artista quiere ofrecer un diálogo original entre la pintura colorista de Guerrero y la arquitectura del espacio.

No puedes perderte la oportunidad de visitar la exposición (y el museo en sí mismo). ‘Dieciocho colores sobre un ensayo’ termina el próximo 17 de septiembre.

Space and color at the Jose Guerrero Center

A few days ago I had the opportunity to revisit one of my favourite places of Granada, the Jose Guerrero Center. It’s located in a center building, next to the Cathedral, rehabilitated in 2000 by one of the most important architects of our country, Antonio Jimenez Torrecillas.  This master of the light gave to the building the quality that this kind of spaces need. And the result was fascinating. One of the parts of the museum that I like the most is the third floor, where you can sit down on a beautiful bench and take a look above the roof of the gothic chapel of the Cathedral.

This time, I went to the centre to show the place to a couple of good friends, who are architects too, and we discovered the temporary exhibition ‘Eighteen colors for a test’, starred by the artista Paloma Gámez. It is very interesting to walk across the building, watching the different stages of the exhibition, which deal of the issue of color. On the low level we find the room called 84.084 millimeters of color, where the painting seems to slip from the upper floor. It’s just in this next level where you can look at some of the paintings of Jose Guerrero. These pictures have been selected by Paloma Gámez and they talk to us about color too. This issue was the most important thing in Guerrero’s works, and nowadays is the main theme in Gámez’s ones.

As you continue going upstairs through the amazing wooden stair, you can see the next part of the temporary exhibition. This second part is called  420.367  seconds of color and it’s about the real spirit of color: its own light. There is a lot of images that projects colours on us and the walls and the sensation is very interesting and funny.

On the third floor you find the most amazing part of the collection. This time it’s called 120.316 square centimeters of color and it’s composed of a lot of filters or translucent pictures in different colours that allow you to see through them. If you have reached to this level, you have to walk around these coloured windows and feel the space. With this piece of art, Paloma wants to offer an original dialogue between the painting of Guerrero and the architecture of the space.
